{"id":270,"date":"2012-02-17T12:34:32","date_gmt":"2012-02-17T17:34:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kristinjanz.com\/?p=270"},"modified":"2012-02-17T12:34:32","modified_gmt":"2012-02-17T17:34:32","slug":"aoifes-kiss","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kristinjanz.com\/?p=270","title":{"rendered":"Aoife&#8217;s Kiss"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I recently finished reading my contributor&#8217;s copy of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/samsdotpublishing.com\/aoife\/cover.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Aoife&#8217;s Kiss<\/a><\/em>, which features my story &#8220;The Kiss of the Blood-Red Pomegranate&#8221;.\u00c2\u00a0 My favorite story was Rachel Zakuta&#8217;s &#8220;Memory of Snow&#8221;, an urban fantasy\u00c2\u00a0retelling of Hans Christian Andersen&#8217;s fairy tale &#8220;The Snow Queen&#8221;.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;ve always found &#8220;The Snow Queen&#8221; the most compelling of Andersen&#8217;s stories, and I thought Zakuta&#8217;s version worked both as an homage and as its own story, with Gerda having to rescue her younger brother from under the spell of their magically-gifted mother in Canada.<\/p>\n<p><em>Aoife&#8217;s Kiss<\/em> also published poetry.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m not sure I read enough poetry to be a good judge, but I loved V. Shirley Valencia&#8217;s poem &#8220;The Stray They Brought Inside&#8221;, printed on the back cover of the magazine.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s a beautifully written poem,\u00c2\u00a0the speculative element both subtle and integral to the piece.<\/p>\n<p>I also\u00c2\u00a0enjoyed\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0&#8220;Wolves&#8221;, by Laura DeHaan, a retelling of &#8220;Little Red Riding Hood&#8221; with a clever twist; and Chris Ward&#8217;s &#8220;Happy Shopping&#8221;, a satirical science fiction piece about the future of consumerism (you can read Chris Ward&#8217;s story and V.
